Day 2

We awoke to what we believed to be 7:00am, the designated time for rising. We soon realised however, that Mr. Rankin had woken us an hour too early. This made very little difference, however, as most of us were already wide awake after a long sleepless night in the hot temperatures. We were treated to a wonderful hot breakfast (mini sausages, rice with seaweed and soy, egg omlete, salad and green tea). Many people enjoyed a second and third helping to the rice.
We then left the Ryokan for the days trip. As we walked towards the subway station we were confronted with a large ritual festival. This festival only occurs once every five years and provided a wonderful photo opporutunity. After a long walk and many subway trips, we finally arrived at Ueno, where our rail passes were prepared, while we explored Ameyohoko market. A wide array of bright colours and cheap colourful food could be scene. After completing our walk around the market we decided to travel to Harajuku, where we had lunch. In a large park and met many `interesting` people. The `Emo` craze has well and truly hit Japan as well as many Bo Peeps. We journeyed to the centre of the park and visited Meiji Jingu Shrine. During our time inside we viewed three traditional weddings taking place (Groom`s in samurai costume) and many people who came to pray. We walked for a few minutes more, and saw some men who appeared to be straight out of Grease practicing some interesting dance moves in the street.
We then travelled by train to Akiharbara, where we found all the latest gadgets and gizmos that won`t come out for several months in Australia.
We returned to the Ryokan for an early night to be ready for tomorrow`s activities.
